Telecommunication equipment used in outdoor environment is becoming more common due to the tighter base station grid needed in 5G high frequency networks, primarily driven by the US market. When installed in areas close to where people are residing (along streets, in city centers etc.) there are strong demands on aesthetical aspects to allow the equipment to blend in (to be considered non-intrusive). One way to meet these requirements is to conceal the products inside a cabinet or shroud, with the consequence that there is one more layer of material (the shroud wall) in front of the antenna, that can potentially affect the Radio Frequency (RF) performance. Hence it is of high importance to use a material in the shroud wall that is minimizing the affect on performance. It is also critical to find a material optimized with regards to both performance and cost for the stand-alone product’s built-in antenna radome.
The main target is to benchmark and scout for potential materials to use in the shroud wall / radome in front of the antenna and propose the most suitable one(s). The scouting can be done both based in existing shroud manufacturer materials as well as other product categories and material areas, globally. When a suitable set of materials are found a basic theoretical categorization shall be done to map out the potential RF performance affecting different frequency spectrums, ranging from Mid Band (sub 6 GHz) up to High Band (up to 39 GHz). As a final step, there is possibility to perform tests on sample pieces at Ericsson’s internal test facilities.
This project aims at students in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
