Background

 

Ericsson, Linköping Lab Operations unit develop and operate standardized global ICT (Information and Communication Technology) solutions towards Ericsson global R&D units. Operational stability in large ICT datacenter is of highest importance, one of the methods to achieve this is to standardize processes and methods in different workflows in the ICT Center. Automated flows will always give the same result and improve the operational stability, reduce time, effort and cost. To increase the degree of automation in the ICT Center server configuration might also be automated in some degree.

 

 

Thesis Description

 

Today the major suppliers of hardware have their own management systems. These systems can be used as a component in the automated server configuration that is one of the parts in the server setup workflow. Using these kind of systems is not that straight forward as it might be. It means that a lot of additional components like file servers, SW engines, network components and asset management systems need to be setup, configured and integrated towards the management system to enable the automated server configuration process. Some of these components already exists in the ICT Center and integration and configuration of this components is required but  some of the components are missing. The missing components like file servers and SW engines needs to be developed, verified and integrated in the final solution.

 

The following steps are envisioned as part of the thesis work:

  • Implement following three different manufacturer (Dell) specified workflows for automated server configuration
  • Method 1 : AutoConfig of baseline and deployment of final profile from HW Management System (OME)
  • Method 2 : AutoConfig of final profile which is prepared by a SW (script)
  • Method 3 : AutoConfig of baseline and deployment of final profile by SW (script)
  • Develop the missing components in the workflows.
  • Investigate and compare the different methods according to following parameters: Time, Effort, Simplicity (Easy way of working), Stability.
  • Analyze Automated configuration in general and the pros and cons compared with the todays manual way of working.
  • Analyze results of the tests of the three different methods and evaluate pros and cons. 

 

The thesis will be concluded with a presentation of the result for the Ericsson ICT Centers Service and Management teams.

 

 

Qualifications

 

This project aims at students in Network and System administration, electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering or similar.

Background in Server configuration and in development of scripts is preferred.

 

Extent: 1-2 students, 22,5 hp each
