As a market leader in mobile network solutions, Ericsson is constantly working towards increasing performance of its systems. Our systems handle a major part of all mobile Internet traffic. More than 300 operators in 140 countries rely on our Evolved Packet Core solutions.

One of the products in Ericsson's portfolio is the Ericsson Packet Core Gateway. The Gateway handles traffic between the radio network and the Internet. All data traffic in a mobile network passes through the Gateway. It is implemented as a distributed real-time system and it runs on many different platforms - including carrier-grade routers, virtual machines and containers.

The Gateway has very high performance requirements such as 99.999% up-time even during extreme traffic conditions. It is mission-critical as it is a corner stone in the Packet Core Network. Without Gateway functionality mobile data traffic will not work. Hence, the quality of the Gateway is of paramount importance.


Description of the thesis

In order to maintain high Quality Assurance of the Gateway a large automated test scope has been implement with very short feedback loops requiring vast resources in test equipment.

In Quality Assurance we want to have shortest possible feedback loops, in order to avoid unnecessary testing in more expensive test phases.

Quality Assurance is done on multiple sites spread across the globe in a number of different test areas.

We would like you to investigate how a test oracle can be implemented that can predict subsequent faults based on the result from the early test phases.

In the thesis work You could:

Explore predictability of faults found in different test phases and test areas of Quality Assurance using Machine Learning.

Create and integrate suitable tools into the test framework of Gateway to get a holistic visualization of testing, pointing out the test cases that have similar warnings or errors.

Evaluate the benefits of doing early test predictions.


We are looking for a Software developer with passion in coding and breaking code. Competency in Machine Learning is desirable.
