Background

Quantum Computing promises to accelerate certain problems that are computationally intractable on classical computers. Near term computing machines that exploit the principles of quantum mechanics (such as superposition, interference and entanglement) comprise less than 100 qubits and lack efficient quantum error correction mechanisms. Due to large error rates, these noisy intermediate scale quantum computers can perform only small number of gate operations reliably. Therefore, it is imperative to devise techniques to produce shallow depth quantum circuits for the quantum algorithms.

 

Project Goals

This master thesis aims at developing short depth quantum circuits to solve optimization problems in 5G Networks and focus on variational techniques to achieve it.  

 

Work Description

The thesis work consists of several items:

  • Understand optimization problems in 5G Networks;
  • Devise a Quantum Circuit to solve one of the optimization problems on the Quantum Simulator
  • Devise Variational Quantum Circuit to port the solution on NISQ Computer
  • Documentation of the solution(s) and evaluation(s);  

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • MSc Student in Physics/Computer Science/Mathematics or other related fields
  • Proficient in Linear Algebra and Quantum Mechanics
  • Understanding of Gate Model Quantum Computing and Quantum Annealing
  • Good programing skills are required; knowledge of C++, Python
  • Being familiar with programming environment in Linux.

 

Additional Details

The work is expected to start in January/February 2019. The work is proposed for two students for a duration of 6 months (Note: working on separate master theses). Location is at Ericsson Research in Stockholm (Kista), Sweden.
