NR/5G is the next generation radio access technology that is expected to provide very high data rate along with many new services. This high data rate and more provisions for new services also brings in new complexities and challenges at the base station. One of the main challenges is the ability to support transmission/reception with very large bandwidth (100 MHz and more). Together with this the support for massive beamforming will add extra challenge on the base station architecture.
Conventional base stations use base band architecture with DSPs, hardware accelerators & CPUs. But with introduction to 5G, the required number of DSPs & hardware accelerators will increase enormously thus increasing the total cost of the base station hardware. One of the alternative options is to explore possibility of using software defined baseband architecture wherein the software implementation ensures hardware independent architecture. The purpose of this master thesis is to explore this possibility.
The work will consist of the following:
- Develop good understanding of commercial off the shelfs (COTS) software architectures
- Develop good understanding of the processors available in the market which are suitable for COTS based software development.
- Analyze implementation complexities involved for massive beamforming for 5G
- Propose hardware independent software architecture for some of the beamforming algorithms
- Analysis of the proposed architecture for the complexities and list down the pros & cons of proposed architecture.
We are searching for two students with knowledge within Computer Science and/or Computer Engineering or other similar programs.
Knowledge/experience in computer architecture, C/C++, Python is an advantage. Excellent analytical capability and team-working skills are important merits. Fluency in written and spoken English is required
The project is expected to be performed in Lund, starting in January 2020.
The positions are placed within Beam Forming Control domain in Baseband Lower Products sector of Product Development Unit Baseband Software. The baseband SW implements the layer 1 and layer 2 protocol layers of the Ericsson RAN product family. The SW is deployed on Ericsson baseband boards where the baseband SW interacts with layer 3 SW, Radio modules and O&M.
