A key factor with 5G is higher capacity, which simply can be translated into higher data speed for the users. In order to achieve this, all parts of the network need to have increased capacity. Some ways to solve this is to use more radios or use a radio with higher capacity that can replace the need for multiple units. From a cost perspective it is beneficial to use as few units as possible because of the hardware cost and rental costs of space in the mast. Therefore, it is the high capacity radio unit called multi carrier radio that will be the focus for this master thesis.



The multi carrier radio unit will have two waveguide interfaces instead of the traditional single port interface frequently used today. This puts additional challenges on the interface design to maintain a robust interface. The robustness of this interface is extra important because it is an interface that is assembled by the customer at site. For the product quality it is important that the assembly repeatedly generates an interface that fulfils requirements related to environmental sealing, RF leakage etc.


We would like to see continuous prototypes/mockups of different concepts during the project. These can be printed in one of our 3D printers we have inhouse or ordered from one of our suppliers when there is a need for a machined prototype.


As an outcome of the thesis work, we expect a concept of the interface design of the radio and the antenna. Preferably it is shown both in forms of CAD-files and drawings together with a prototype that demonstrates the concept.


In addition, we also would like you to propose a set of verification methods that we can use during design verification of this interface to see that it works as intended both during the design phase but also during volume production.


Requirements/ key qualifications

Master student within Product Development, Mechanical Engineering or similar.


We believe this thesis is done by two students working as a team together with support from us.
