Background:

Around 3% of the total electricity consumed in the world is done by data centers. Thus, optimizing the energy consumption with the help of AI we help us reduce OPEX and carbon footprint. Within machine learning, optimization algorithms are used together with (deep) neural networks to minimize or maximize a Model’s mathematical function, where the internal parameters of the model play a very important role in during the training part of it. Specifically, the optimization strategies and algorithms help in finding the optimum values of a model’s parameters.

 

 

Job description and project goals
 

In this work we propose you to use deep reinforcement learning techniques to control a simulated data center in order to optimize the power consumption. Reinforcement learning can optimize a system’s performance without the need of model knowledge.

You will learn how a data center works and you will need to identify the critical parameters to control in order to reduce the power consumption. You will build up the simulated model and evaluate the results. Visualizing optimization algorithms will also be part of the task.

You will also work in creating a business case to predict the amount of cost savings and carbon footprint that the simulated optimized data center could generate.

 

 

Qualifications
 

  • Last year of master’s degree studies in the area of data science, or related fields
  • Python programming skills and open source software experience are required
  • Knowledge on machine learning algorithms, neural networks and reinforcement learning is a must
  • Knowledge on data centers is a plus
  • Proficient in the use of spoken and written English
