Background

Advanced Antenna Systems (AAS) and beamforming are technologies used in 5G NR (New Radio) systems to improve capacity and coverage. Code book-based beamforming is a mechanism where the device selects a precoder matrix from a set of predefined codebooks. The precoder is selected based on measurements on the configured CSI-RS (Channel State Information- Reference signals).

CSI-RS port configuration is an important factor to be considered in deploying radio base stations. It refers to how the physical antennas are grouped to achieve desired coverage pattern.

 

Objective

The objective of this thesis is to investigate the optimal CSI-RS configuration for radio deployments. The work involves evaluating different CSI-RS port configuration taking into consideration the angular distribution of the UE. The configuration shall be setup in such a way that DL cell throughput is maximized.

 

The investigation shall assume:

•A known spatial traffic distribution

•64 TX MIMO capable AAS (Advanced Antenna System)

•A given coverage shape (Example: Macro, Hotspot or highrise)

 

Qualifications

We are searching for one or two students that is close to finish an M.Sc. degree in Wireless communication, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a similar program. Knowledge in NR and wireless communication, Matlab and Machine learning knowledge is an advantage. As person you are fluent in English, have good analytical capability and good social skills.

The positions are placed within Downlink Layer 1 domain in Baseband Lower Products sector of Product Development Unit Baseband Software. The baseband SW implements the layer 1 and layer 2 protocol layers of the Ericsson RAN product family. The SW is deployed on Ericsson baseband boards and on Ericsson radio boards where the baseband SW interacts with layer 3 SW, Radio modules and O&M.
