Autonomous vehicles today rely only on the local sensors on the cars to detect objects around them including pedestrians. There are ongoing discussions and research into using additional external sources of data to improve the cars view of the surroundings. This is to prevent endangering the pedestrians in case of poor visibility due to bad weather, obstacles, etc.
One suggested data source is the telecom network - among other things, the telecom network can potentially share anonymized user location data with the connected cars. One challenge that comes with adding such data sources is security.
The overall goal of the master thesis is to investigate the value of using telecom networks to secure the Autonomous Vehicle Ecosystem.
In the master thesis you will to investigate and analyse methods for ensuring that the data in the eco system is reliable and protected from 'hacked' data sources. Ex. Spoofed pedestrian/car locations being shared with the connected cars making them believe there are pedestrians/other vehicles in its way, etc. The thesis includes building a quick prototype that helps show case the networks role to secure the autonomous vehicle eco system using location based data.
Suitable for 2 students, with the following qualification:
- Master in IT / Data related area, such as Computer Science, Computer Systems and Networks, Communication Engineering or Telecommunication is preferred.
- Competence/Interest in IT security
- Programming skills, any of Python, Java, C, C++
- Ability to work with large data sets for data extraction, filtering and manipulation
- Competence in data bases (SQL, NoSQL…)
- Knowledge of mobile communication protocols / network is good but not a must
- Good knowledge in English, oral and written
