Background

The IT industry has turned to embrace a new infrastructure where container-based workloads are deployed. These infrastructures are built around a container orchestrator (CO), which automate all aspects of coordinating and managing containers. The CO decouples container workloads not just from the HW but also from management systems allocating compute, storage and IO resources on several hosts spread in clusters in one or more datacentres thus forming from the workload perspective a distributed host.

The Telco industry has for Capex and Opex reasons extended its application to run on this new infrastructure. The Telco applications then are just a workload (or in IT jargon a tenant) on top of this distributed host. The security boundaries have change compared with traditional environments where the tenants need to protect themselves from Host attacks and at the same time protect the Hosts from itself. This has forced the Telco industry to investigate new technologies that provide data-in-use protection. One of many such technologies is called SGX enclaves that are based on a CPU chip from Intel. In short, the enclave technology creates a protected process(s) within a process that is by design able to run isolated from the rest of the system.

Embracing enclaves opens opportunities for different system parts to execute ion this isolated box.
One of the dominating telco applications is using the erlang language combined with a powerful optimized runtime and middleware. Read more here. One of the strong strengths in the erlang solution is the ability to move work into different environments suitable for a certain task.

This master thesis main question is to answer what if we move work into enclaves to secure aspects of ram usage and sensitive functions as a language extension.

Thesis Description

To accomplish the task to move erlang processes into enclave there exist several constraints imposed by the enclave technology and from the erlang solution itself. To build such language extension to run an arbitrary erlang process as a trusted process inside an enclave is the gist of this challenging task.

To assist our erlang and security experts will be available to guide it through.

The thesis will be concluded with a result presentation for the Ericsson team.
