As a market leader in mobile network solutions, Ericsson is constantly working towards increasing performance of its systems. Our systems handle a major part of all mobile Internet traffic. More than 300 operators in 140 countries rely on our Evolved Packet Core solutions.


One of the products in Ericsson's portfolio is the Ericsson Packet Core User Plane. The User Plane handles traffic between the radio network and the Internet. All data traffic in a mobile network passes through the User Plane. It is implemented as a distributed real-time system and it runs on many different platforms - including carrier-grade routers, virtual machines and containers.


The User Plane has very high performance requirements such as 99.999% up-time even during extreme traffic conditions. It is mission-critical as it is a corner stone in the Packet Core Network. Without User Plane functionality mobile data traffic will not work. Hence, the integrity of the User Plane is of paramount importance.


Description of the thesis


Penetration testing is a paramount aspect for verification of mission-critical applications that is part of the mobile infrastructure connecting the global population through Internet.

Moving into 5G the User Plane is decoupled into a next-generation microservice-based Cloud Native architecture. Such architecture makes it possible to do fuzz testing per microservice to ensure the continuous integrity of each individual service.

We would like You to investigate how fuzz testing can be used to ensure the integrity of the Ericsson User Plane.


In the thesis work You could:

Explore tools/libraries for (instrumented) fuzz testing.

Integrate the suitable tools into the test framework of the User Plane microservices.

Evaluate the benefits of doing fuzz testing.
