As a market leader in mobile network solutions, Ericsson is constantly working towards increasing performance of its systems. Our systems handle a major part of all mobile Internet traffic. More than 300 operators in 140 countries rely on our Evolved Packet Core solutions.


One of the products in Ericsson's portfolio is the Ericsson Packet Core User Plane. The User Plane handles traffic between the radio network and the Internet. All data traffic in a mobile network passes through the User Plane. It is implemented as a distributed real-time system and runs on many different platforms - including carrier-grade routers, virtual machines and containers.


With demands on higher data throughput rapidly increasing, we need to continually boost the performance of the EPG. Running on Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors, we reached 193 Gbps user plane throughput on one dual-socket Intel® processor-based server, in July 2019.


Description of the thesis


In 5G there is a need for extreme data rates; both in terms of total system throughput as well as peak user throughput. In addition to that there is a strong need to also ensure that the end-to-end data is transported through the Packet Core network with extremely low latencies. In conjunction to that the next-generation Packet Core User Plane have adopted a microservice-based Cloud Native architecture.


Within this the Cloud Native load simulator needs to continuously evolve to ensure these extreme data rates and verify the low latency aspect of it. That, together with providing a usable tool that can be used to perform automated verification in a continuous delivery pipeline.
