Master Thesis: Investigation of 3-phase converter balancing techniques and methods

Job Description

Date: Sep 18, 2019

Who we are

Embedded Power at Lindholmen develops Power products for most of the Ericsson ICT product portfolio including 5G. By writing detailed specifications, Embedded Power uses external suppliers for design and manufacturing (Black Box development) of custom-made power solutions. The range of products goes from AC and/or DC driven converters/inverters, power distribution units to Lithium battery products and optimized chargers for those. The products are intended for global use and operate from 100 W to power systems up to 20 kW. The power systems are the engine of the telecom infrastructure and a prerequisite for the Networked Society.

Goal with master thesis

Some markets require AC power installations to use all 3-phases and perform phase balance of the load. Dependent if the end load is common or the load is different for each AC phase there are different main solutions to obtain a sufficient phase balance. This technology area needs to be investigated and Ericsson is looking to find implementational solutions to choose between. The market and regulatory requirements are also of interest to investigate further.

On a top-level following should be covered in the Master Thesis.

1. Find, describe and judge power products for/solutions of:

Separate balancing equipment on the primary side (balancing box)

Fully integrated 3-phase converter technique/topology

Control/regulation of three separate one-phase converters (with common output system voltage)

2. 3-phase balancing requirement(s) investigation/proposal with respect to different national/market needs, industry standards etc.

3. Business Intelligence; What is the industry standard implementations/solution(s)? Which 3pp solutions exist today?

What’s in it for you?

You will collaborate with experts of defining power systems for telecom, that act on a truly global arena. First hand you will experience how we work agile with hardware development closely together with suppliers. You will be able to use your academic studies in an applied way and understand how you transform theoretical knowledge to business value. Most important of all you will increase your network in one of the most prominent companies in the telecom industry.

Working methods

Theoretical analysis and literature study. Also measuring on balancing equipment can be considered.

Qualification

Education: Master within Electrical engineering, Engineering Physics  or similar.

An eager interest in power products/area

English skills (fluid), both oral and written

Suitable for 1 or 2 students

Application

If you feel interested, please send in your application as soon as possible. The start date can be adjusted to both your and the business needs – the intention is to start in January 2020.

While applying please attach your updated CV, current grades and cover letter written in English into one document (under CV field in the application tool) and clearly define your technical knowledge.
