Developer- Master thesis
We are now looking for an ambitious master thesis student who wants to explore and come up with wideband directional coupler designs that is manufacturing process tolerant, i.e. the process variations have low impact on insertion loss and directivity. In the context of the point-to-point radio link MINI-LINK, the ambition is to have as few variants of directional couplers as possible covering the frequency band 6-42 GHz.
In low frequency designs, it is feasible to use discrete solutions for a directional coupler. At microwave and millimeter wave frequencies, printed solutions on a printed circuit board, PCB, are more attractive due to cost benefits and performance. However, this requires an intelligent design and trade-off between different design parameters such as bandwidth, insertion loss, directivity and process tolerance.
Today several topologies how to design a directional coupler in a system to cover a narrow band implementation exists. To meet up with wideband designs at circuit level there is a need of ultra wideband directional couplers.
About the role:
The purpose of the thesis is to develop ultra wideband directional couplers in the frequency band 6-42GHz using the simulation tools HFSS/ADS.
- Investigate different topologies of directional couplers.
- Investigate usage of PCB structures/layers to increase bandwidth of the design
- Verify designs in HFSS/ADS.
- Design PCBs with test structures to enable comparison of simulation results and measurements.
- Perform laboratory measurements for a sample set of components.
- Master of science program student in electronics with knowledge in microwave circuit design.
- Knowledge in ADS and HFSS environment would be an asset but is not a strict requirement.
- You are flexible and available during the period with us.
- You are a driven and self-employed person who can structure your own work.
