Master Thesis - GNSS timing receiver performance in urban canyons
GNSS (Global Network Satellite System) timing receivers are used to provide accurate time, better than 50ns to Radio Base Station (RBS) in ERS (Ericsson Radio System). Many 5G Street Macro RBS using GNSS receiver will be installed on street level in city centers. This is called urban canyons as the sky visibility from their GNSS antenna will be very limited. The visible GNSS satellites in such areas represents often bad DOP (Dilution of Precision), i.e. bad position accuracy from triangulation viewpoint impacting time accuracy. Surrounding tall buildings will additionally cause multi-path signals due to reflexes.
The study shall identify how the GNSS timing receiver accuracy, 1PPS (one pulse per second), is impacted by usage in urban canyons. Theory to be collected by literature research. Test setup to be defined. Time accuracy performance to be measured by placing the GNSS antenna in realistic positions in locations representing urban canyons. The study shall as conclusion provide guidance on where the GNSS antenna can be placed in urban canyons.
The following steps are envisioned as part of the thesis work:
Investigate how the 1PPS accuracy and stability depends on GNSS antenna placement in urban canyons. Theory to be collected by literature research and other open sources.
Implement a test setup and test achieved performance in challenging realistic conditions.
Analyze the results from theory, practical tests and propose guidelines.
The thesis will be concluded with a result presentation for Ericsson
Requirements/ key qualifications:
This project aims at students in MS computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering or similar.
The successful candidate must have

· Fluent in English, both written and spoken
· Good communications skills
· Self-motivated and positive person
