Master Thesis: Use of permissioned blockchain for licensing
SW Licensing is an essential tool to any SW company to get the revenues associated to the delivered products and protect the SW assets and IPR from misuse. Often SW licensing is enforced by IT companies very strictly by preventing the use of sw assetts in case there’s no corresponding valid license. Sw licensing in the telecom industry needs to follow a different paradigm in order to cope with the very dynamic nature of sw in a cloud environment in relation to the possible reduction of service to subscribers of the telecom operator when licenses are not available, or the licensed capacity is exhausted.
One approach to satisfy at the same time the telecom vendor, the telecom operator and the customer subscribers is to base SW licensing on usage reporting and related invoicing. Let the customer use all the features and capacity he needs and invoice for usage later on.
Such approach can be fully successful only in presence of an infrastructure that ensure full transparency and integrity of license and usage data.
We are now looking for a Master Thesis student to explore the use of a permissioned blockchain involving both Ericsson and the Customer Telecom operator, the definition of Smart Contracts describing the functionalities and related capacity and producing invoices when usage of those functionalities and capacity is reported by the telecom network. Smart Contracts can also be used to implement innovative licensing models.
The goal is to validate the concept of a trusted infrastructure that fully automates the usage reporting and related invoicing, provides full transparency and confidence to the Customer of the usage data, enables automated renewal/withdraw of licenses or their expansions and eliminates completely the need for Auditing as a means to ensure SW revenues.
