Job Description

Date: Nov 8, 2018

Background

A quantum algorithm is a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations by a quantum computer. All classical algorithms can be executed on a quantum computer, but not all quantum algorithms can be processed on a classical computer because quantum algorithms use the quantum mechanics properties of quantum superposition or quantum entanglement. Ericsson uses many algorithms for antenna design, device management and it is predicted that in order to manage massive IoT devices a quantum accelerator and quantum software frameworks will be needed. In this work we want to find out which of the already existing quantum algorithms are suitable for ICT and how the existing classical algorithms can be converted into quantum algorithms, i.e. which algorithms present a quantum advantage?

Project Goals

Identify relevant algorithms for the telco/ICT industry. Study how they could benefit from a quantum computer platform.

Work Description

The thesis work consists of several items:

  1. Perform a comprehensive literature/patent study on classical, quantum algorithms being used by operators/Ericsson;
  2. Detailed study of the chosen algorithm at the mathematical level;
  3. Detailed study of quantum gates and quantum algebra;
  4. Define the gate operations needed for the classical algorithm to work on a quantum accelerator.

Qualifications and Experience

Last year of Master degree studies in the area of mathematics, physics or related fields. Be proficient in algebra (vectors, matrices tensors, ket/bra notation)

Languages: the candidate must be proficient in the use of spoken and written English.

Additional Details

The work is expected to start in January/February 2019. The work is proposed for one student for a duration of 6 months. Location is at Ericsson Research in Stockholm (Kista), Sweden.

Applications should include a short motivation letter, CV, and transcripts of records. Please submit your application in English as soon as possible - we are working continuously with candidate selection. For informal queries, feel free to email Gemma Vall-Ilosera at gemma.vall-llosera@ericsson.com.
