Master Thesis: Analysis and simulation of flexible queueing systems
Our team works on developing tools to analyze data generated by different test activities in the Networks products development organization. We use machine learning, statistics and optimization methods in our applications to support decision making processes. Queueing theory is one of the research areas we are currently exploring. Queueing theory is the mathematical study of queues and waiting times in stochastic systems. We have a scheduling system that allocates resources (servers) to multiple types of jobs that arrive dynamically over time. The scheduling system can be modelled as flexible queueing system, where multiple queues and servers are connected through a bipartite graph. By applying queueing theory, we can optimize the system.
The objective of the thesis project is to build an evaluation environment for flexible queuing systems. The main steps of the work would be:
- to define and parametrize the flexible queuing systems that can model the use of shared resources, based on data collected from the system,
- replay collected data to analyze impact of number of servers on waiting time,
- to propose analytic models that can predict resource utilization and waiting time, and can be used for system optimization,
- validate the proposed analytic models via simulation, using measured traces as well as artificial data.
