Embedded Power at Lindholmen is responsible for Power product development towards most of the Ericsson product portfolio. We are a part of Ericsson’s global design organization and engaged in developing products for the present and future mobile networks. Embedded Power are developing products for the internal stakeholders; Radio, Enclosure & Power, Microwave, Baseband, and Core/Cloud, using external suppliers for design and manufacturing (Black Box development). The power products we develop are both for AC and DC, and consists of power supply units (converters/inverters), interface units, distribution units, batteries, lightning protection devices etc. Our products are intended for global use and operates in the range from 100W up to power systems of 20kW. The power systems are the engine of the telecom infrastructure and a prerequisite for the Networked Society.

 

Thesis Work Description:

Background:

Battery backup is important for telecom, especially in those frequent grid-off regions. Since the lithium-ion battery has outstanding cycle performance, large charge and discharge current, and high energy density, it has been widely used to portable devices and electrical vehicles, and it is being gradually used in telecom industry.

The Telecom application have many parameters such as temperature, system voltage and discharge period in common with the application of portable devices and electrical vehicles, but some crucial parameters like battery cells and load patterns are different. To be able to evaluate the lithium-ion battery performance for telecom application, effective evaluation models are required.

 

Goal for the master thesis:

This work aims to develop a simulation model to evaluate the lithium-ion battery performance used for telecom industry. The work shall define the critical parameters of the battery simulation model. The simulation model shall be verified by testing a limited number of battery cells used by Ericsson, and the testing shall be done by using equipment already available at Ericsson.

 

Qualification:

  • Education: Master within Electrical engineering, Engineering Physics, Computer Science or similar
  • An eager interest in power products
  • English skills, both oral and written

     

Duration and location:

  • Period: 1 semester, 30 ECTS points
  • Starting date: first quarter of 2019
  • Number of students: Suitable for 1 or 2 students
  • Ericsson Lindholmen science park
