Introduction

 

As a market leader in mobile network solutions, Ericsson is constantly working towards increasing performance of its systems. Our systems handle a major part of all mobile Internet traffic. More than 300 operators in 140 countries rely on our Evolved Packet Core solutions.
 

One of the products in Ericsson's portfolio is the Evolved Packet Gateway, EPG. The EPG sits in the middle of the Packet Core Network as a Gateway between the Radio network and the Internet. All traffic in a mobile network passes through this type of gateway and thus it has high requirement on scalability, robustness and performance. The EPG is implemented as a distributed real-time system that is split into a Control Plane and a Data Plane. The EPG runs on many different platforms - including carrier-grade Routers, Virtual Machines and Containers.

 

Running on Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors, we reached 40 Gbps and 2.6 million users per core, in 2017. With demands on higher data throughput rapidly increasing, we need to continually boost the performance of our EPG.

 

Description of the thesis (2 proposals)

 

Proposal 1 - Investigating on how different CPUs and hardware affects performance

 

We would like You to investigate how our EPG performs with different hardware to be able to identify the most optimal hardware to run on. The hardware will be provided by the company.

 

In the thesis work You could:

  • Evaluate the impact of different CPU generations, CPU speeds, memory speeds, memory lanes and different number of cores
  • Evaluate how Turbo Boost Technology affects the performance
  • Evaluate different NUMA aspects, as new CPUs have integrated NUMA in each socket. Also evaluate different aspects of PCIe buses and NUMA node connections.
  • Evaluate how locked cache for certain cores can be used to increase performance.


You must be interested and prepared to work hands-on in the EPG development environment.

 

Proposal 2 - How to boost performance of Evolved Packet Gateway using Intel® Resource Director Technology?

 

Last year, Intel® launched the Intel® Resource Director Technology (Intel® RDT), which offers an advanced resource monitoring and control feature set, that is designed to improve the control over the usage of shared platform resources such as memory bandwidth and last-level cache.

 

In this thesis we would like you to investigate how Intel® RDT could be used to boost the EPG performance, comparing pros and cons with different usages.

 

In the thesis work You could evaluate how:

  • The Intel® Cache Monitoring Technology (CMT), which helps you to find a noisy neighbor over-utilizing the last-level cache, can be used
  • The Intel® Memory Bandwidth Monitoring (MBM), which helps you to find a noisy neighbor using too much memory bandwidth, can be used
  • The Intel® Cache Allocation Technology (CAT), which allows you to quiet a noisy neighbor and allocate proper resources, can be used
  • The Intel® Code and Data Prioritization (CDP), which allows you to give priority and protection to apps and VMS with large code and data footprints, can be used

 

You must be interested and prepared to work hands-on in the EPG development environment.
