Our Exciting Opportunity
In an automated warehouse where autonomous robots load trucks with products while sharing the same environment with humans, a proper safety analysis is performed to avoid the hazardous situations without compromising the productivity. Robots with limited hardware (e.g. CPU, memory) rely on edge/cloud infrastructure to run complex tasks needed for safe collaboration. A hard communication requirement, such as very low latency and high throughput, that must be fulfilled in these time-critical scenarios. In some cases, the robot’s tasks do not necessarily need to be moved to the edge/cloud. A possibility is to just send the robot’s sensor data to be processed in the edge/cloud, based on a model decision. Therefore, there will be three options: execute all the tasks in the node, partially in the edge/cloud or all in the edge/cloud.
When multiple robots are present in this environment, there is a competition to use edge resources. In this sense, a policy to decide which robot has the highest priority to offload the processes should be devised. For instance, robots associated to higher risk levels must have higher priority and robots with poorer communication must have lower priority. However, all robots must have the chance to use the edge resource. We have a basic model that controls the offloading process. The tasks of this thesis will be to extend the model:

  • characterize the communication level with the respect to latency, throughput, availability, etc.;
  • decide which task to offload and when to do that;
  • perform highly-computational processing in edge / cloud;
  • conflict resolution when the resources reach maximum limit.

The high-level task is to manage offloading process in the edge device where multiple robots cooperate to achieve a goal with respect to safety, performance, energy usage in human-robot collaborative use case.

You will

  • Do literature review, identifying relevant concepts and algorithms for safety analysis and image processing involving communication between robot and the cloud.
  • Propose a suitable edge/cloud -based and D2D communication for collaborative robots.
  • Model and implement the technique for different scenarios of the selected use case.
  • Use real robots for testing the software for the presented use case.
  • Performance evaluation for edge/cloud-based and D2D scenarios.
  • Report to Machine Reasoning Section Manager


To be successful in the role you must have

  • MSc studies in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or similar area.
  • Excellent programming skills in C/C++ and Python.
  • Good knowledge of concepts in machine learning (e.g. deep learning), robotics (e.g. ROS2, V-REP, Gazebo).
  • Experiences with machine learning libraries, such as Tensor flow, Keras, PyTorch, Sci-kit learn.
  • Knowledge in communication protocols and technologies (edge/cloud, D2D).
  • Knowledge in safety analysis techniques is a bonus.
  • Team working skills
  • Writing skills and proficiency in English
