Master Thesis: QoS prediction used for notifications

About this opportunity


In a 3GPP radio network the data transmissions are divided into data flows where each flow has a set of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters defined, making it possible to set requirements on delay, bitrate etc.

The data flow (QoS Flows) may be non-GBR or GBR. For a GBR flow, a Guaranteed Bitrate (GBR) is defined, and admission control is used to ensure that the flow are only admitted to the system if it is expected that the QoS requirements including the GBR can be fulfilled.

Recently, a new QoS parameter has been added, ‘Notification Control’. If that is set, the NW, and eventually the UE will be informed if the conditions have been changed, and the fulfillment of the QoS requirements can not be guaranteed by the network. The idea is that the UE’s application can adapt based on the guarantee received. I.e. a remote control vehicle could limit the speed so that it is more robust to transmission delays.


What you will do


The goal of this work is to investigate methods to predict if the QoS can be fulfilled.

The study will be performed in a radio network simulator that is available at Ericsson. It will involve programming in Java and evaluation in matlab.

Multiple traffic mixes with traffic types having different QoS requirements should be investigated, and different scheduling algorithms should be tested. The prediction algorithm should be evaluated based on false notifications and missed notifications.

If time allows, the prediction algorithm can be combined with a scheduler that prioritize QoS Flows that need resources to fulfill the QoS requirement, and a QoS congestion control algorithm that will prioritize to fulfill the QoS of QoS flows where no Notification has been sent.

The thesis will be concluded with a result presentation for the Ericsson Research team.
