In the Research Area Audio Technology, which is part of Ericsson Research, we are pushing the technology frontiers in spatial audio, combining signal processing and machine learning methods, tools, and techniques to create immersive audio that provides an emotional level of entertainment in listening to music, watching movies, or playing games.

We are now looking for a talented and motivated student to join us for a study on Machine Learning based Approach for Spatial Extrapolation of Head-Related (HR) Filters.

HR filters describe how a sound is filtered by the head, torso, and pinnae of a listener as it propagates from the source position to the listener’s ear drum in free space. An HR filter based binaural rendering approach has been gradually established, where a spatial audio scene is generated by directly filtering audio source signals with a pair of HR filters of desired locations. This approach is particularly attractive for many emerging applications, e.g., virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), or extended reality (XR), and mobile communication systems, where headsets are commonly used.

HR filters are typically measured at discrete points in space on a sphere. The measurement points are defined by azimuth and elevation. Ideally, they cover the entire sphere so that a sound source can be rendered at any location in space. However, mechanical restrictions of measurement systems usually led to missing points within certain area, e.g., an area below certain elevation. In this project, taking on a machine learning based approach, we develop an algorithm for spatial extrapolation to predict HR filters within the area where no HR filters were measured.

 

What you will do

 

  • Develop and implement a method for spatial extrapolation of HR filters
  • Evaluate the performance of the method in an in-house Python framework
  • Analyze results, identify problems, and provide improvement suggestions

 

You will bring

 

We are looking for a motivated student that is close to finish an M.Sc. degree in Machine Learning, Signal Processing, Computer Science, or a similar program. As the work is research-oriented we expect an analytical mindset, ability to learn quickly, work independently and being able to identify problems and solutions.

  • Excellent university grades, particularly in Linear algebra
  • Strong programming skills in Python, familiar with PyTorch or Tensor Flow
  • Knowledge in Audio-/Image-/Video-related domain is an advantage.
  • Good communication skills
  • Good written and spoken English, ability to work as part of an international team
