About this opportunity

 

A distributed quantum computing system requires to share information between spatially separated quantum processors via a quantum communication channel. In our work, we use travelling microwave photon to experimentally realize the information transmission between two superconducting quantum processors through a quantum channel. The microwave photon is emitted from one quantum processor, travelling through the quantum channel, and finally re-absorbed by the second processor. Here we introduce a structure of one data qubit and one emitter qubit coupled to the quantum channel, with a coupler between them to parametrically exchange the quantum state. This structure offers ease of calibration and flexibility in fine-tuning the photon emission and re-absorption, leading to high-fidelity quantum state transfer and remote entanglement operations.

 

What you will do

 

By coherently driving the emitter qubit, which is strongly coupled to a waveguide, we will be able to capture two entangled microwave photons. The main task of the project is to experimentally demonstrate the entangled two-photon state from the structure. The student will characterize the whole structure, perform measurements of the devices at millikelvin temperatures inside a dilution cryostat, and will reconstruct the propagating modes of the photons by matching their temporal envelopes and operating quantum tomography. The master thesis project is under collaboration with 202Q-lab, Quantum Technology Laboratory, a division of the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) at Chalmers University of Technology. The student will work on site in Chalmers, Gothenburg.

 

You will bring

  • Background in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or similar
  • Excellent grades
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to acquire new knowledge and apply it in the job. Ability to formulate problems and solve them.
  • Collaboration and communication skills with high energy and motivation
  • Good programming skills incl. Python
  • Experience in superconducting quantum computing considered a valuable merit
