Thesis background

This is an opportunity to work with technology leading radio network performance modeling in the mobile industry. 5G is developed to enable use cases such as broadband experience everywhere anytime, smart vehicles (transport & infrastructure), media everywhere, critical control of remote devices and interaction human-IoT. 5G systems are to be operated in a wide range of frequency bands and one example of new bands is mmWave bands, e.g. 26-40 GHz. 5G is also designed for using unlicensed bands in e.g. 6-7 GHz range. Licensed assisted access is an option for deploying unlicensed bands which means operation along with licensed bands such as e.g. sub-6 GHz bands. Sub-6 GHz bands are typically used for providing coverage and the unlicensed bands can be used as a booster to provide very high speeds when there is coverage.

The thesis is divided into several steps with the end goal of analyzing the performance benefits with mmWave and unlicensed bands when they are deployed together with sub-6 GHz bands for mobile broadband services.

The project is intended for one master's student and is expected to be performed for a duration of 6 months.
