Ericsson’s 5G leadership is ensured through disruptive and innovative solutions. MIMO is a key technology for increasing the data rate capabilities in our Radio products. In those products CMOS, integrated circuits offer unique possibilities when it comes to integration and low-cost manufacturing. The topic of this Master Thesis project is frequency synthesis and key challenges such as process and voltage variations as well as temperature change are issues that will be addressed during the design phase.

What you will do

 

Frequency synthesizers are key systems in radio front-ends. Beam steering using the frequency synthesizers is attractive due to its simplicity and lower cost. In this thesis, a phase-locked loops frequency synthesizer is to be designed. The thesis is divided into the following parts:

  • Literature study of state-of-the-art PLL-based frequency synthesizers in MIMO systems.
  • Technology investigations and simulations of the main phase locked loop blocks such as voltage /digitally controlled oscillators and mmwave frequency dividers.
  • Simulation of a PLL-based frequency synthesizer at the target frequency.

Once the study is concluded a presentation of the results to the research team and interested experts will be conducted.

 

You will bring

 

To be successful in this position you need to fulfill the following:

  • This project aims at students in electrical engineering, computer engineering or similar.
  • Interest in wireless communication and CMOS ASIC design in the mm-wave frequency range.
  • Good understanding of design, and simulation methods of integrated circuits.
  • Good RTL scripting skills are favorable.
  • Good knowledge of IC design tools such as Cadence Virtuoso and Spectre.
  • Finished courses in analog IC design, digital IC design, and VLSI.
