About this opportunity


Efficient understanding of both geometric and semantic characteristics of the environment are needed so that robots or XR devices can appropriately perform requested tasks and understand the local physical environment.


We are looking for a master thesis student who can help us carry out research on how to implement an environmental recognition step as part of semantic segmentation and object detection for indoor environments. The pipeline would gather information about the detected and segmented objects to recognize the environment and will continuously update that information and use it to increase the accuracy and robustness of the used methods by limiting the decision spaces and possible predicted objects.


What you will do


The scope of the thesis includes but not limited to:


  • Develop a thesis plan and identify research questions related to gathering metadata from semantic segmentation of point clouds and/or images and using to recognize the environment
  • Become acquainted to ROS and SLAM framework
  • Become acquainted with using additional data from the environment, for example is it an office, restaurant, library, home, etc. and use that data to help subsequent semantic segmentation searches
  • Carry out a literature survey on prior works related to joint environmental recognition and semantic segmentation
  • Selecting and enhancing semantic segmentation for further implementation
  • Develop a study and experimental setup
  • Develop a C++, python/OpenCV scripts and ROS wrapper/libraries for a proof of concept


You will bring


We are looking for a self-motivated and creative student with the following qualifications:



  • Master student in the area of Medialogy, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Robotics.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to work independently
  • Hands-on programming experience
  • Experience with computer vision
  • Understanding of networking concepts
  • Understanding of User Experience, Quality of Experience, Experiment Design, XR, especially Augmented Reality.
  • Fluent in English, both verbal and written communication
