About this opportunity

 

There are multiple ways to schedule the resources in a radio network, depending on the wanted behaviour. If the only goal is to maximize the network efficiency, the user with the best radio conditions should be scheduled first. However, if fairness between users is the goal, the scheduler could prioritize users with bad radio quality, to strive for same bitrate for all users. However, that will get a bad system throughput, since most resources would go to users with low bitrate. A common compromize is Round Robbin scheduling, where resources are evenly distributed between users. Users with good radio conditions will then get higher bitrate than users with bad conditions, but everybody gets the same amount of resources. As complement admission control us used to prevent overload.

 

In a 3GPP radio network the data transmissions are divided into data flows where each flow has a set of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters defined, making it possible to set requirements on delay, bitrate etc.

When the required QoS is defined for users in a radio network, the scheduler will ensure that the users QoS are fulfilled.

 

What you will do

 

The goal is to investigate how a QoS controlling scheduler together with admission control can be designed in a 5G radio network, and compare the performance to some other scheduler algorithms.

The study will be performed in a radio network simulator available at Ericsson. It will involve programming in Java and evaluation in Matlab.

Multiple traffic mixes with traffic types having different QoS requirements should be investigated, and the scheduler should be evaluated both based on system efficiency and QoS fulfillment.

The thesis will be concluded with a result presentation for the Ericsson Research team.

  • You are a MSc student in electrical engineering, computer science or related fields.
