About this opportunity


Thesis Background


Encoded video plays a major part of everyone’s daily use of internet. Enabling streaming- and on demand video in a quality that was just fantasy 10-15 years ago, this technology does not stop evolving with lower bandwidth demands making it possible to get even better quality and more features into the video stream. Modern services such as cloud gaming and edge rendered VR are made possible by these developments. These services are however not optimal and there are still opportunities to create a better visual experience by expanding the scope and capabilities of the video codecs.

At Ericsson, we have been heavily involved in creating the existing video codecs and evaluation methods, standardized in MPEG and ITU-T. Lately algorithms such as Netflix’s VMAF and ITU-T P.1204.3 has shown great performance when estimating the average experienced quality of a video clip, but they are lacking when evaluating just noticeable differences on shorter timescales.


What you will do


The idea is to investigate these high fidelity conditions and find the ”just noticeable differences” for different framerates, compression changes, and other video statistics such as amount of movement. This knowledge would be critical for designing the next generation encoding controllers for Cloud gaming and remote rendered VR. The work would entail making subjective tests with multiple persons, mainly traditional passive viewing video test. However, it can also be interesting to see how these effects carry over to interactive experiences such as Cloud gaming, and if there are unique components of those experiences that makes us more or less sensitive to sudden degradations. Data analysis can be made in multiple ways, deep learning for extracting video quality compression artifacts, statistical models to predict perceptibility of each degradation sequence, and whatever the student can come up with.


You will bring


  • M.Sc. student, preferably in computer science, electrical engineering, engineering physics or similar. Courses in media compression, statistics and deep learning are considered valuable merits
  • Ability to learn quickly, work independently and identify problems and solutions is necessary. The work is research oriented
  • Self-motivation
  • Education in information technology, signal processing, statistics or machine learning
