Our research spans technologies for intelligent automation, novel applications of ML/AI to differentiate Ericsson's portfolio and the study and development of frameworks for AI in products and services. We work with business units and market areas, and collaborate with academia and research institutes. The Architectures and Frameworks group in Luleå, Sweden, have the next generation AI platform, tools and frameworks as main focus.

About this opportunity


Thesis Background


In this project, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques will be used to optimize the work of batteries in RBSs. The enablement of RBS to support Smart Grid operation related to voltage fluctuations will have an impact on battery operation and degradation, on each distributed RBS that dynamically participates in the voltage control service via the PSU. It allows us to improve not only the battery performance but also to determine local constraints of battery performance In RBSs.


What you will do


The thesis is suitable for one student and would involve the following steps (can be adjusted according to research interest):


  • Literature review identifying relevant concepts and algorithms for data analysis of communication, the RBS power system, and Radio Units (RU).
  • Testing suitable AI/ML algorithms.
  • Modeling and implementation of chosen techniques for different scenarios of the selected use case.
  • Evaluation of the obtained model for the considered user case.


You will bring


  • High motivation and seeking a challenging research work with the freedom to propose and develop your own ideas.
  • MSc student, preferably in computer science, electrical or computer engineering, Mathematics, Physics or similar areas.
  • Excellent Python programming skills
  • Good knowledge of concepts in machine learning (including deep learning), time series analysis, anomaly detection.
  • Experiences with machine learning libraries as TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, Scikit-Learn, Spark. Knowledge of docker containers and orchestration systems, telecommunications, C/C++ is a bonus.
  • Like to build end-to-end prototypes and concepts.
  • Be fluent in English.
