Our Exciting Opportunity


One of the last steps in the production of a radio base station is a series of adjustments and performance verification steps, known as production test. A typical adjustment is to bias amplifiers and a typical performance verification step is to ensure that the transmitter fulfills regulatory performance requirements. The production test is both time-consuming and expensive, partly because the instruments that are needed for carrying out the tests are very costly. One possible way of reducing time spent in production tests is to optimize the test flow by using machine learning methods as regression and prediction.

Thesis Description

The thesis focuses on analyzing the available production data of radio base stations and find correlations between the different steps in the test process. This is to be done using algorithms commonly found in the field of machine learning. Exactly which algorithms are to be tested is up to the student, but at least two different methods for supervised and/or semi-supervised learning should be tested. Of course, all steps of acquiring, cleaning, and pre-processing also must be carried out. Special effort will be needed in interpreting the results.

You will

•    Find and study suitable literature on optimization of hardware and software testing
•    Gain a basic understanding of the production test process
•    Obtain data from our databases (formulate suitable SQL-queries and/or gather BLOB:s)
•    Clean and otherwise pre-process data
•    Apply at least two different methods for supervised learning to see if the outcome of some test-steps can be predicted, and at what   confidence level using different validation methods in one product.
•    Investigate if the same algorithms can be used on a second product, or if modifications are needed
•    Analyze the results to find out how much time could potentially be saved in production test
•    Report to the Product Development Leader


If there is time and the student has an interest: briefly investigate possible methods and requirements for transfer learning between data on two, or more, different products.

To be successful in the role you must have

•    Background in machine learning (required)
•    Intermediate or advanced knowledge of MATLAB (or Python) (required)

•    SQL-queries (is an advantage but not a requirement)
•    Some knowledge of radio systems and electronics (is an advantage but not a requirement)

This project is suitable for Master students in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, engineering physics or similar.
The thesis will be concluded with a presentation for the Ericsson production test development team and a written report.
