What You Will Do

The Data Centre Engineer will be reporting to the DC Manager under Infrastructure Services & Automation. They will be responsible for daily DC management operational tasks and provide input into the following. Fulltime onsite presence is expected and will be based in the Netherlands, Hilversum.

  • Physical Access Management
    • Coordinate visitor physical access and ID card
    • Supervise, escort, and assist customers with on premise work
    • Preparation for internal and external audit assessments
  • Policies, Standards and Guidelines
    • Provide input into appropriate documents covering the following DC elements, but not limited to, H&S, Physical Access, Service Request, Installation Standards, IT Provisioning Workflows, Incident, Escalation, Problem, Change, Event, and Floor Management.
  • Cable Infrastructure and Cabling Management
    • Provide project input and T&M quotes to provide interconnect installation services
    • Install Fiber & UTP patches – request for change or break-fix
    • Survey requests from Mediapark for connectivity requests provided by RBM between buildings through star points and fiber ducts
    • Keep all records updated and accurate
    • Request network switch ports and IP addresses
    • Update cable patching schedules
    • Provide T&M quotes for small and large cable infrastructure installation works
    • Ensure installation standards are adhered too and escalate remediation where RBM standards are not met
  • Capacity Management
    • Update capacity reports, and improve better ways (automation) updating and forecasting
    • Regular recording of power data from UPS, PDUs, and MDUs
    • Publish DC capacity data via dashboard
  • DC Event Management
    • Critical Electrical Infrastructure
    • Coordination and communication to RBM stakeholders of the respective PPM activities potentially impacting RBM services. Based on activity, communication to the landlord to cascade to other tenants hosted in the building.
    • Be available and facilitate critical infrastructure activities based on the landlords 52-week PPM (Planned Preventative Maintenance) for each DC.
    • Observe RBM change freeze dates and resolve conflicts in advance of PPM activity
    • Below are the main activities and average maintenance days
    • Electrical Safety Inspection (NEN 3140) – 2 days per year
    • HVAC Cooling – 2 days per year, RBM 1 day onsite annual inspection
    • UPS & Batteries – 2 nights
    • Fire Suppression System - Yearly maintenance in coordination with customer

 

  • FM Service Vendor Management
    • Vendor Contract Management – agreement review and renewals
    • Capacity billing and invoicing
      • MRC and ARC for power and x-connects
      • Validate invoices and customer kW usage, in accordance with agreements
      • Mediapark “spaceracks” contract for Fiber connectivity and space rental
    • Capacity usage and forecasting
    • Colo provider REFM projects are assessed, and risks mitigated
    • Colo provider energy cost saving are passed on to RBM
    • Risk register and issues logged with follow up actions
    • Post-mortem / lessons learnt reviews
  • Customer Engagement
    • Field all Data Centre IT Provisioning capacity and allocation engagement service requests from internal / external customers
    • Respond in a timely manner on general enquiries from customers for all DC related topics
  • Tools and Technology
    • DCIM software used, RackTables, iTracs, PowerIQ, and Nagios
    • Work with CMDB team to pull in physical information
  • Audit & OHS
    • Prepare evidence for internal and external auditors
    • Ensure local Electrical Safety standards are adhered too
    • DC Tools and Equipment are inspected and calibrated where applicable

  • The DC person is customer facing and flexible in their approach to work, always seeking solutions to ensure the best way of working for our stakeholders and customers. A logical and operational mindset is key as the responsible DC person will provide guidance and safety to everyone entering the restricted areas. They will have the foresight to strategically manage capacity in the DC without rework.
  • It is necessary to have a good understanding of Data Centres, how the critical electrical infrastructure path/systems and IT backbone infrastructure is configured. Each location will have it’s own nuances and opportunities to harmonise DC processes/procedures and establish a continuous service improvements (CSI) outlook.
  • Data is a precious commodity, and the DC Operations person will accurately collect and record DC related data. The information will be used to define and drive DC strategies.
  • They take pride in their work and ensure they have details around DC capacity availability, a common question which usually needs to be addressed quickly or made available in a short space of time.
  • The DC team member will have a view of all M&E infrastructure changes and resolve conflicts where the business is at risk or impact, and therefore, negotiation and good planning acumen is necessary. They will raise and communicate the necessary paperwork for awareness and approval.
