Background

Non-limiting connectivity is the key for secure real-time and effective mission-critical operations. In disaster or emergency situations, the coverage and capacity provided by the existing cellular network at the emergency area may not be available or enough to meet the mission-critical communication needs. In these scenarios, deployable systems such as cells on wheels (e.g., portable base stations on trucks) or cells on wings (e.g., portable base stations on drones) can bring fast and reliable connectivity for mission-critical users.

Deployable systems can be operated either independently as a standalone network, or it can be integrated to the terrestrial cellular networks as part of the self-healing solutions. For both cases, it is important to 1) optimize the deployment of these portable base stations to secure the quality of service (QoS) requirements of required mission-critical services, and at the same time, 2) mitigate the interference that may impact the commercial services served by the fixed cellular network.

You will report to Research Leader. We are looking for one or two students for a duration of around 6 months.

 

Thesis Description

This master thesis project will investigate how we can optimize a deployable system configuration (e.g., 3D locations, antenna configurations, transmit power configurations, backhaul connectivity, etc.) in combination with the cellular network (if available) to meet/assure the QoS requirements of mission-critical users. Specifically, this thesis consists of two main tasks:

Task 1: Study and Survey, where you will

  1. Study use cases and key challenges for deployable systems;
  2. Identify one use case as the target case for this project.

Task 2: Deployment optimization, where you will

  1. Investigate the key parameters that can be tuned for the deployable system and the fixed network configuration;
  2. Develop methods and algorithms to jointly optimize the configuration of a deployable system and fixed cellular network, securing the QoS for mission-critical users.

 

To be successful in the role you must be

A student in communication engineering, electrical engineering, machine learning, computer science/engineering or similar.

You will report to Research Leader. We are looking for one or two students for a duration of around 6 months.
